Bratislava, 15 April 2026 – Slovakia welcomes the interest of the Republic of Costa Rica in deepening bilateral cooperation and developing new trade opportunities. This was stated by State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Rastislav Chovanec, following today’s meeting with Costa Rica’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alejandro Solano Ortiz.

“Costa Rica is an important and stable partner for Slovakia in the Central American region, with whom we share positions on key issues, including the promotion of democratic values and support for multilateralism. At the same time, we aim to strengthen our relations in trade exchange, where we currently see the greatest potential in projects focused on carbon-neutral energy solutions as well as agricultural products such as organic fertilizers,” said State Secretary Rastislav Chovanec.

Further opportunities exist in areas such as information technology, cybersecurity, medical devices, and the digitalization of public administration. In this regard, the partners agreed on the need to strengthen contacts between business entities in both countries, support investment, and encourage the involvement of Slovak companies in projects in Costa Rica.

“The visit of our Costa Rican partner to Bratislava once again confirmed our ambition to actively develop economic diplomacy and strengthen partnerships in dynamically developing regions of the world, such as Latin America. I am pleased that we have jointly identified opportunities for concrete projects that can bring mutual benefits to both our countries and their citizens,” emphasised R. Chovanec.

The discussion also addressed the progress in the strategic partnership between the European Union and the Latin American and Caribbean region, which creates space for further deepening mutual dialogue. State Secretary R. Chovanec highlighted the EU–Central America Association Agreement as key, noting that it opens the door for Slovak investments in Costa Rican infrastructure and high value-added industries.

Regarding cooperation at the multilateral level, Slovakia appreciated Costa Rica’s constructive approach within international organizations, particularly its role in the United Nations and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The State Secretary also highlighted the long-standing excellent coordination between the two countries in candidacies for positions in international bodies and expressed special thanks for Costa Rica’s support of Slovakia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2028–2029 term.
