Bratislava, 12 February 2025 – On Tuesday, 11 February 2025, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Marek Eštok, received the new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Canada to Slovakia, Karen Elizabeth Mollica. The partners discussed the strengthening of cooperation at the political and business level.
“Canada is a close partner and reliable ally for Slovakia in the North Atlantic Alliance. It is also home to one of our largest expatriate communities in the world and I am pleased that we can strengthen our people-to-people contacts through the Youth Mobility Agreement. We appreciate that there is a strong interest on the part of both countries to continue to develop the Slovak-Canadian partnership,” said the Secretary of State, adding that their relations are close and it is important to use their potential, which also stems from Canada’s Strategic Partnership Agreement with the European Union or the Free Trade Agreement with the European Community (CETA). Negotiations on both documents were successfully completed during the Slovak Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2016.
Canada took its relationship with Slovakia to a new level in 2023, when a full-fledged Canadian Embassy in Bratislava was officially opened. Ambassador K. E. Mollic presented her vision for her diplomatic engagement in Slovakia, focusing on deepening friendly dialogue and broad-based cooperation.
“We value Canada’s commitment to promoting multilateralism and a rules-based international order and to maintaining strong transatlantic relations. At the same time, we discussed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where I reiterated Slovakia’s interest in ending the war as soon as possible through a just and sustainable peace based on the fundamental principles of the United Nations,” added M. Eštok.
